Oscar Hammerstein was a German-Jewish immigrant who began his life in America sweeping floors in a factory. He made a fortune in cigar manufacturing and went on to establish numerous theatres, including the Metropolitan Opera House. Oscar Hammerstein II became the most successful lyricist of all time and wrote more than 850 songs including The Sound of Music and Oklahoma!
